Windows Mobile still strong in Latin America…really?
March 9th, 2010
Windows Mobile has a downward path lately, with WM 6.5 surprising no one, and many people considering it dead. But it looks like the OS is gaining market share in Latin America according to Doug Smith, Microsoft’s Latin American director of mobile communications, while talking about the upcoming launch of Windows Phone 7 Series OS in the region. According to Business News Americas, Windows Mobile’s smartphone market share is 26% in Brazil and 24% in Mexico, surprisingly leaving a huge amount of Latin American users out of the equation. True, Brazil and Mexico have 250 million mobile subscribers, but only in Argentina, for example, there are 45 million phone users, where Windows Mobile is practically extinct and replaced by BlackBerry and Nokia handsets in most cases, which means Latin America is not well represented in this market share study.
