iPhoneOS 4.0 to deliver multitasking support?

March 12th, 2010

Apple is expected to introduce iPhone OS 4.0 this summer and rumors are spreading that it – finally – have multitasking support. The iPhone 4.0 OS launch will probably be part of a new iPhone model, perhaps called iPhone 4G, following its latest model, the iPhone 3G S.

Multitasking support has been always a missed feature by iPhone users, but in fact, iPhone OS has multitasking support already, only that is restricted to core functions like call handling and specific core apps like SMS, Email, iPod, etc, letting out of the game any app downloaded from the App Store. The reason is the iPhone OS’s security model, which prevents any app to run in background to avoid spyware, adware or viruses.

Still, iPhone OS will encounter difficulties towards multitasking, specially with its UI, which is not currently thought for multiple apps. Apple would have to find a simple way to switch apps, and at the same time without consuming too much resources like RAM and battery.
